Canadas most improbable speed skating story has become a reality. Super Bowl Green Bay Packers Jersey . A little more than a year after he strapped on long-track speed skates for the first time, Mathieu Giroux, 23, of Montreal secured a spot on the Canadian Olympic team yesterday in Calgary. Racing in the 1,500-metre event at Olympic trials to determine the Canadian team for Vancouver, Giroux needed a top-three finish to secure a ticket to the Games. His time of 1 minute 45.32 seconds was good enough for second place behind Lukas Makowsky, of Regina, who placed first in 1:44.46. Kyle Parrott of Minnedosa, Man., was third with a time of 1:45.69. "It feels just awesome. Finally," Giroux said Friday after learning he had locked up a spot on the Olympic squad. After suffering an ankle injury two years ago that made the tight turns of short-track racing too painful to execute, Giroux decided - on a whim - to switch to the long-track. He bought a pair of long-track blades last fall and drove out to Richmond, B.C., where the Canadian long-track squad was training. It was a personal mission for Giroux: In 2006, he was seventh on a team that sent six short-track speed skaters to the Turin Olympics. Since then he has been determined to compete in Vancouver, even if his change of sport drew skepticism from the long-track coaches. But Giroux, whose progression through the World Cup circuit has been unusually swift, said the struggle is now worth it. "All those choices I made 12 months ago to switch to long-track: Quit school for a year, moving to the West in April, all those choices I made finally paid off," he said. Early on, his race did not look good. After a false start, Giroux said he was too cautious coming off the line when the gun went off, leaving him in fifth place on the first of two laps. Drawing on his short-track experience, where he is known for gaining momentum toward the end, Giroux fought back in the second lap. When he crossed the line, Canadian speed skating officials, including team director Brian Rahill, were visibly relieved. Since Giroux is adept at skating in packs - another quirk from his short-track background - the Canadians want him for the team pursuit, where three long-track skaters move around the track in a group. But Giroux needed to make the team first in an individual distance before being placed on the team pursuit squad with Denny Morrison and Makowsky. That team is expected to bring home a medal for Canada in Vancouver. "We were really happy," Rahill said. "Hes really become a key member of the team-pursuit team and [Canadian coach Marcel Lacroix] was really hoping to be able to count on him. So from that perspective we go into the games with our strongest team pursuit team, which was in doubt I believe, until this outcome." A year ago, Giroux admits he had no business being on a long-track. He was disqualified from his first few races for not knowing when to change lanes, and coaches soon stationed themselves on the edge of the track and shouted at him when to make the move. He has since refined his short-track talents to become a sophisticated long-track skater who is no longer out of his element, coach Ingrid Paul said. The mens team for Vancouver is now unofficially set, ahead of a formal announcement in Calgary next week. Canada can send eight men to the Olympics in long-track. They are: Giroux, Makowsky, Parrot, Jeremy Wotherspoon, Jamie Gregg, Mike Ireland, François-Olivier Roberge, and Denny Morrison, who was pre-qualified in the 1,500-metre event, and did not race yesterday. Makowskys victory continues an impressive winning streak for the 22-year-old skater heading into the Olympics. He won the 5,000-metre race earlier in the week, securing a trip to the Olympics. That came a month after he won his first world cup medal in the 1,500-metres in Norway in November. But dont expect him to do anything odd to keep the streak alive. Makowsky said hes not the superstitious type, so hes not about to refrain from washing his speed skating suit or his t-shirt for the next month and a half, just to hold onto his good luck of late. "Im not superstitious, but I like having my routines leading up to races," Makowsky said. "[But] I like the scent of clean clothes."   Authentic Bears Jersey .
