MONTREAL - For Danny Maciocia, its a homecoming. Saints Ivory Jersey . For Marc Trestman, its a first taste of the playoffs in Canada. The CFL East Division final on Saturday will be a special moment for both head coaches. Maciocia of the Edmonton Eskimos grew up a 10-minute drive from Olympic Stadium while Trestman of the Montreal Alouettes is a veteran NFL offensive co-ordinator in his first year of 12-man football. Watch the Wendys CFL on TSN East Final on TSN and TSN HD at Noon et/9am pt. They will each bring a star quarterback - Edmontons Ricky Ray and Montreals Anthony Calvillo - for what is expected to be a high-scoring battle. The winner moves on to the Grey Cup game eight days later, also at Olympic Stadium. As Edmonton players milled about on the field Friday, Maciocias father Cosmo watched proudly as his son fielded questions from a large throng of reporters in French, and then did the same in English. Cosmo Maciocia is borough mayor for the northeast of the city, but said his constituents will understand that he will cheer for the visiting team this time. The 41-year-old Danny, a former junior coach, got his start as an unpaid volunteer coach with the Alouettes in 1996 and worked his way up to offensive co-ordinator. He moved to Edmonton in the same job in 2002 and was named head coach three years later, in time to beat Montreal in overtime in the 2005 Grey Cup game. This is a unique situation, he said. In 2001, my last season with the Alouettes, we were hosting the Grey Cup game and it would have been huge for me to be in that game. Unfortunately, it didnt work out. Now, years later, with all the games that have been played between these teams, including Grey Cup games, here we are. To be here and to try to find a way to be part of that big game just like I dreamed about in 2001, it gives me shivers. And were one game away from realizing that objective. The 10-8 Eskimos finished fourth in the West Division, but were able to cross over to the East playoffs because they had more points than the Easts third-place team. Last weekend, they became the first western team to win an east semifinal when they downed the Blue Bombers 29-21 in Winnipeg. Now they hope to make it an all-western Grey Cup game but upsetting the favoured Alouettes for the right to face either Calgary or B.C. for the Cup. The two teams have met 11 times in Grey Cup games since the 1950s, including three times in this decade - 2002 when Montreal won in Edmonton, 2003 when Eskimos got them back and 2005 when the Eskimos won in double overtime. Maciocia, Ray and Calvillo were part of all three meetings. The Eskimos then missed the playoffs two seasons in a row before squeaking in this year. But Maciocia, who added the title of director of football operations in 2007, said his team has righted itself with the addition of veterans like kicker Noel Prefontaine, rush end Fred Perry and cornerback Jordan Younger and an influx of 14 first-year players. There were vehement calls for his head along the way, or at least pleas that he give up the coaching job, but he felt he had to stay on to finish the rebuilding job. Its a lot of pressure but anyone who knows my story - two years as a volunteer coach, not making a dime, and my wife supporting me on about $250 per week - those were challenges. This was just a little speed bump, he said. Were here to compete and win, but if we take 30 seconds of our precious time and think about what we did this year, I think a lot of people should say we should be proud of this football team and that the future is very bright. The Eskimos can score points quickly, with Ray a constant threat to catch Kamau Peterson or Fred Stamps downfield for a long gain at any time. Last week, he also had success dumping the ball off to his running backs, A.J. Harris in particular. The Alouettes counter with the leagues top offence this season, which piled up 610 points in 18 games with an attack that moves the ball slowly but surely upfield with the run-and-gun offence Trestman brought in. Trestman replaced Jim Popp, who struggled as both coach and general manager last season and returned to his management job this season. He had no CFL experience when he came to camp, but quickly transformed the team into an explosive offensive force. The biggest impression I had was the players - their extreme passion for this game, he said. Ive been impressed with what Ive seen of the schematics, the quality of coaching in this league on all sides of the ball, including special teams. And Ive also been impressed with the big play ability of the players in this league. This has been a year with some tremendous plays, some awesome throws, unbelievable catches, players extending themselves to do things that are really special. Trestman said hes still learning about handling the final three minutes of a game, which is a major difference between Canadian and American ball, but with the work he puts into his job, its not likely to be a factor. He changed the blocking schemes and saw sacks fall from a league-worst 68 to a league-best 22, although that was partly from having Calvillo release the ball more quickly to targets like Ben Cahoon, who had 107 catches, and Jamel Richardson, who led the CFL with 16 touchdowns. Calvillo led with 43 TD passes. His offensive scheme has been very successful, said Cahoon. No one really knew if he was able to bring an NFL-type offence up here and if it would translate to success, but hes done it very well with the help of some coaches who have CFL experience and little tweaks here and there. His first regular-season game was a 33-10 victory over Hamilton. Now Trestman is looking for a first playoff win before a crowd expected to be in the 30,000 range (more than 55,000 tickets have been sold for the Grey Cup). The Eskimos brought enough clothes for a two-week stay. Should they win, they are expected to stay in the east, although they may move out of Montreal for a few days, rather than fly back to Edmonton. St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Andrew McCutchens two-run home run capped a four-run sixth inning to help the Pittsburgh Pirates take a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game set. Neil Walker hit a two-run double in the frame while Charlie Morton (1-0) worked six innings of one-run, three-hit ball to pick up the win for the Pirates, who took two of three from the Cubs over the weekend to open the season. He did everything you could hope for from a starter, said Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle about Morton. He had a lot of walks but he dealt with that good and had an outstanding game for us. Lance Berkman and Allen Craig each drove in a run for the Cardinals, who dropped two of three at home against San Diego in the season-opening series. Kyle Lohse (0-1) was touched for four runs on six hits in seven innings. St. Louis got one across in the second when David Freese hit into a double play that scored Berkman, who led off with a walk and moved to third on Craigs single. Lohse had faced just one batter over the minimum through the first five frames, but the Pirates got to him in the sixth. Ronny Cedeno led off with a bunt and Jose Tabata later walked. Walker followed with aa double that chased home both runners and McCutchen followed by clubbing a 0-1 pitch that just carried over the wall in left into the bullpen for a 4-1 lead. Premier Mark Sanchez Jersey. That ball was up and away to Walker, it was a bad pitch, said Lohse. Then I threw what was supposed to be a down and away sinker across the plate and McCutchen got a good wing on it. Those two pitches cost us the game. Jose Veras induced an inning-ending double play in the seventh, but Evan Meek nearly gave away the lead in the eighth. Colby Rasmus singled to start the inning and Albert Pujols followed with a walk. Berkman then singled to bring home Rasmus and, after Mike Crotta took the mound, Craig hit into a fielders choice that scored Pujols to make it a 4-3 game. After David Freese struck out, Joel Hanrahan took the mound and struck out Yadier Molina to end the frame. Hanrahan stayed on in the ninth and set the Cardinals down in order for his third save of the year. GAME NOTES:St. Louis won nine of the 15 games against Pittsburgh last season...St. Louis left seven men on base and batted 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position...James McDonald takes the mound for Pittsburgh on Tuesday and will be opposed by Kyle McClellan.
